Video compression is a method of data compression, which consists of reducing the amount of data in the video, minimizing the impact on visual quality (i.e. the audience should not see the difference with the human eyes).

The interest of video compression is to reduce the cost of storing and transmitting video files.

There are two basic principles of compression:

  • intra-frame compression: it is assumed that the size of a particular pixel in the image can be predicted from the neighboring pixels in the same frame.

  • inter-frame compression: it is assumed that the pixels of a frame at a given time can be predicted from the pixels of a frame just before or just after.
